Police Warning to Public Over 'Digital' Housecalls

by isleofman.com 18th June 2009

Police in the West of the Island have received a number of recent enquiries from members of the public who have been unexpectedly visited by persons claiming to be from a United Kingdom based ‘Digital Switchover’ company.

Genuine engineers visiting people at home will do by prior arrangement with the digital supplier and will have with them full identification.

Members of the public are urged to check this identity prior to allowing persons access to their homes.

If you have any doubts whatsoever as to the validity of the caller, either call the company they claim to represent or the Police.

Many such companies already have security measures in place such as keyword passwords.

PC Mercer of the Western Neighbourhood Policing Team says 'Please be wary of who you allow into your home.

'Ask for identification and make sure that you do not simply glance at it.

'In this instance, nothing was taken but this kind of technique, using false identification, can be used to commit burglaries.

'We do not want the public to be alarmed as there have not been any offences committed and would seek to reassure the public that we are taking steps to try and trace the people who conducted these unexpected visits.

'If you are in any way unsure, contact the company or the Police, but do it there and then and not when the people have gone.'
