Bat colony delays demolition in Circular Road

by isleofman.com 17th June 2009

A road in Douglas will remain closed until tomorrow after a building collapsed this morning.

The derelict former newsagents is next to offices at Rose House on Circular Road, and staff were evacuated for safety reasons.

However, work on demolishing the building has been delayed following the discovery of a bat colony.

Emergency services were called to the back of 61 Circular Road at 11.30am.

No one was injured in the collapse and following an inspection the area was sealed off and made safe.

A demolition company was called in, but plans to demolish the building overnight have been put on hold, while a team from DAFF examines the colony.

The road will stay closed, between its junctions with St George's Street and Peel Road, until the operation has been completed.
