MLC questions need for cultural ambassador

The former director of Manx National Heritage has been appointed the Isle of Man's new cultural ambassador.

Stephen Harrison, who recently took early retirement, will spearhead a national cultural tourism strategy.

In Tynwald today tourism minister Martyn Quayle said his brief was to bring in more visitors by enhancing the Island's brand and reputation.

But it's proving a controversial appointment.

Eddie Lowey, MLC, questioned whether Mr Harrison was the right man for the job and whether the Island needed an ambassador.

He was also unhappy the post had not been advertised.

Mr Quayle told him the department was severely understaffed at the moment and the appointment moved things forward:
