The Minister for Trade and Industry Hon David Cretney MHK has welcomed
the appointment of two new political members to his Department.
The
changes, recently announced by the Chief Minister, see Mrs Clare
Christian MLC and Mr David Quirk MHK joining the Department. They
replace Mr Juan Turner MLC and Mr David Callister MLC.
The Minister commented 'I am delighted to welcome Mrs Christian and Mr Quirk to the Department of Trade and Industry.
'I
have given Mrs Christian responsibility for leading a new high level
group comprising several of my most senior officers and, where
appropriate, external advisors, to consider further opportunities for
diversification and growth of our economy on a strategic basis looking
forward to the years ahead.
'I am retaining authority for
overall policy relating to economic development - which includes the
shipping and aircraft registries, manufacturing, e-gaming, film,
construction and retail - and Mrs Christian will join with me in terms
of this oversight.
'I have given Mr Quirk delegated authority
for training and employment and look forward to working with him in
these important areas. His responsibilities will cover the Job Centre
and the Training Centre, both of which are crucial to the generation of
employment opportunities in these difficult economic times.
'I
am retaining authority for Work Permits, given its importance at this
time of rising unemployment. I know Mr Quirk will bring passion and
commitment to this important aspect of the Department’s
responsibilities.
'I am retaining authority in regard to energy
policy, which is a key policy priority for this Government and for
which I chair the Energy Policy Working Group.
'I believe
these appointments will enable my Department to continue its excellent
work in supporting the development and diversification of the Island’s
economy, helping to provide employment opportunities for all in our
community'.
