MLC still keen to see a publicly elected LegCo

by isleofman.com 2nd June 2009

Plans for a publicly elected Legislative Council continue to progress through the branches of the legislature.

A proposal to have eight MLCs elected from eight constituencies was backed in the House of Keys, and narrowly got the nod in the Council itself.

MLC David Callister says the proposals have several 'flaws' but are the road to greater democracy.

On Manx Radio's Agenda programme he said:

"We have now myself and Mr Butt and Juan Turner none of whom have ever been elected by the public in any shape or form.

"And we are now making decisions on behalf of the people of the Isle of Man without a mandate - now I don't think that's right.

"The mandate that we have can hang on as few as 13 votes from members of the House of Keys.

"The reason it's come from the House of Keys, who are virtually split on this, is that there's a very large number of members that think the perfect system exists now."
