Tony Brown plans to lead delegation to US capital

by isleofman.com 1st June 2009

The chief minister says he hopes to visit Washington before the end of the year, to spread the message that the Isle of Man is a well regulated financial centre.

Last week Tony Brown led a team from the Island to Brussels, to work on relationships within the European Union.

The Isle of Man is not a member of the EU, but Mr Brown reminded the people he met that many of their regulations have an impact on its trade.

He believes the next step is strengthening links across the Atlantic and told Manx Radio:

"Clearly our next one is to go to Washington.

"Because of the United States presidential elections last year we gave that one a miss. There was no point in going to Washington until we knew the outcome of the election.

"We'll be going off to Washington to again brief people out there as to where we are, and it's very important for us to continue to promote the Isle of Man as being acknowledged by G20 as on the White List [and] therefore it should not be affected by any legislation they introduce in relation to tax havens.

"So the point that we are in a different sort of business, and a far more responsible business, is something that we wish to continue to promote."
