Change Provider, Keep your Number: Sure Welcomes Advent of Mobile Number Portability

by isleofman.com 28th May 2009

An exciting development in telecoms is about to launch on the Isle of Man, and Sure is poised to guide new and existing customers through the changes and opportunities it will bring.

From Monday 29th June, following a decision by the Communications Commission in conjunction with the Island's mobile operators, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will be available on the Isle of Man.

MNP will enable Manx residents to move from one telecoms company to another without having to change their number, allowing them to choose the optimum service for their needs with the minimum of disruption.

Mike Stanton, Country Manager for Sure in the Isle of Man, calls it a 'huge milestone in communications on the Isle of Man'.

He comments 'A survey that we conducted last year found that number portability was the single biggest reason for islanders not wanting to switch service provider. When asked if keeping their number would encourage them to switch to Sure, a massive 85% of Islanders said ‘yes’ or ‘maybe’. Only 15% said that it would not.'

In addition to the Isle of Man, Sure’s network operates across the Channel Islands, where number portability regulation has already been introduced.

Mike Stanton continues 'When number portability was introduced in Jersey, we saw a very significant increase in the number of customers coming to Sure, and we expect the same thing to happen here in the Isle of Man.

'Moving from one provider to another is very quick and simple and, by moving to Sure, we think customers will see better value and better service. MNP will improve competition and that is great for everyone. It is an opportunity for all operators to raise their game'.

As a reuslt of introducing MNP in the Channel Islands, Sure is acquainted with the legal, technical, regulatory and consumer aspects of the development, and it is thought that it adoption on the Island will be a smooth process.

Both individuals and businesses stand to benefit from MNP and in the run-up to 29th June, there will be plentiful information in the press to enable consumers to make the right decision for them.

The changeover process itself, which is accomplished by SMS and completed within a maximum of 2 days, will be simple and hassle-free, with no charge to the customer for using the service.
