Rollout of Superfast Broadband Continues

by isleofman.com 28th May 2009

Businesses and residents in the Port Erin, Peel, and Kirk Michael exchange areas (numbers beginning 83, 84 and 87 respectively) are to get even faster broadband from 1st June, thanks to the introduction by Manx Telecom of ADSL2+, an enhanced broadband service which delivers faster upstream and downstream speeds.

ADSL2+ offers users potential downstream speeds of up to16 Megabits per second (the current service offers up to 8 Mbit/s) and potential upstream speeds up to 832Kbp/s (currently up to 256Kbp/s), and the rollout of ADSL2+ to Port Erin, Peel and Kirk Michael follows the successful commercial pilot of the new faster service in early May in the Castletown area.

'We were delighted by the uptake of the ADSL2+ in Castletown', says Manx Telecom’s wholesale and interconnect manager, Peter Callow.  'An encouraging number of businesses and residential customers have opted for the new service and are currently benefitting from significantly higher speeds than normal broadband.

'We aim to bring ADSL2+ to as many parts of the Island as possible in a planned and measured way, and are pleased that we can now offer it to customers in the Port Erin, Peel, and Kirk Michael area.'

The ADSL2+ upgrade will not be automatically applied to existing broadband customers, they will have to opt in, and to benefit from the improved service must have an ADSL2+ compatible router (broadband modems are not compatible).  Anyone wishing to upgrade to the new service should contact their Internet Service Provider (ISP) for advice on options and applicable charges.

Manx Telecom stresses that broadband speeds are determined by many factors, including a customer's type of router and internal wiring, the number of other users of the broadband service and the Internet in general.

For these reasons, broadband speeds can never be guaranteed, however, they were confident that the majority of customers using ADSL2+ will experience faster upload and download speeds.

Broadband users can get information and advice by contacting their Internet Service Provider.  Further information on the roll-out of ADSL2+ service to other exchange areas will be updated at www.manxtelecom.com/ADSL2plus
