The Department of Transport would like to advise motorists of upcoming works to widen a section of the carriageway on Lord Street from its junction with Duke Street/Market Hill to Ridgeway Street.
The work is scheduled to commence on Sunday 21st June 2009 and will be completed no later than Friday 14th August, 2009.
Lord Street is one of the busiest roads in Douglas and there are currently problems at peak periods particularly on the section from Duke Street and Ridgeway Street; the dedicated right turn lane into Ridgeway Street is very short and quickly fills with vehicles.
This causes queuing for outbound traffic intending to travel straight on along Lord Street, which in turn is responsible for some of the congestion back at the roundabout at Parade Street/Fort Street especially in the evening peak periods.
In order to lengthen the right turn lane into Ridgeway Street, the Department intends to reduce the width of the footways on both sides of Lord Street (Coronation Terrace). However, in order to carry out this work, the Department requires this section of Lord Street to be temporarily narrowed down to single lane traffic.
A number of traffic management options were assessed and it is proposed to implement a temporary one-way system from the Parade Street/Fort Street (cannons) roundabout to Ridgeway Street in a westerly direction.
All traffic coming into Douglas from Peel Road direction will be diverted at both Circular Road and at Ridgeway Street towards Victoria Street. Access to the North Quay and from Fort Street will be unaffected.
Parking restrictions in Victoria Street will be strictly enforced during this period (22nd June – 14th August) to ensure the efficient flow of traffic.
The Department would like to apologise for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation.
