IRIS will progress in north and west

by isleofman.com 23rd May 2009

What’s going on with IRIS?

That’s the question being asked by a local conservationist after the water quality on Island beaches was criticised in the latest Marine Conservation Society report.

The level of pollution on three beaches, Gansey, Port Grenaugh and Central beach in Douglas, all exceeded the Society’s limit.

The original Iris plan involved centralisation of the Island's sewage treatment at the Meary Veg Treatment Plant in Santon.

Bill Dale of Beach Buddies says he's curious about what's happening with the project.

Damning criticism of IRIS includes the length of time it's taking to introduce the scheme in the north and west of the Island, where sewage is still being piped out to sea.

However, Transport Minister David Anderson says some of the report’s findings are 'misleading and inaccurate' and he’s confident schemes can be developed to treat effluent and clean up the areas in question.
