Minister to be questioned on unusual pets

by isleofman.com 22nd May 2009

Exotic pets feature on the question paper for next week's sitting of the House of Keys.

North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson will ask Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne to justify allowing the sale of tarantula spiders and python snakes to the public.

He also wants to know how the department ensures the safety and welfare of such wild and exotic animals, and what advice is given to traders wishing to sell them and people who might be tempted to buy them.

With a look at what else is on the order paper, here's Beth Espey (text, below, from attached audio file):

There are ten questions for oral answer in the Keys, but there will be a definite feeling of deja vu.

David Quirk will ask twice about the Department of Transport's policy for removing abandoned vehicles from public highways and private land, and it's clearly a problem affecting Malew and Santon as well, because Graham Creegeen has exactly the same query.

The Transport Minister will also be pushed about the "cost and design failure of IRIS" and the action being taken to guarantee prices and services for air travel over here are the same as the United Kingdom.

The Endangered Species Bill will be read for the first time while the clauses of the Gambling Supervision Bill and the Payment of Members' Expenses Bill will also be examined.

In the Legislative Council, there's one question about the progress of the Manx Ancestry Centre and a number of bills to be considered, including the Terrorism Finance Bill, Advocates Amendment Bill and the Constitution Bill 2007.

Keys questions will be broadcast live on Manx Radio AM 1368 from 10am on Tuesday.
