A 21 year-old man who threatened his girlfriend with a knife has been given a total of eight months custody, suspended for two years, by High Bailiff Michael Moyle.
Andrew Mark Cain, of Peel Road in Douglas, appeared for sentence after admitting theft, provoking behaviour, obstructing police and damaging property.
Cain stole food from Marks and Spencer on March 26 and, following his arrest, told police he had no money.
The court heard that on March 14 there was a domestic incident at the home of his girlfiend in Malvern Road, Douglas.
Cain took a kitchen knife, held it to her throat and jabbed at worktops, for which he was arrested.
He was arrested again on April 4 for breach of bail, and on that occasion gave a false name to police.
His advocate said the knife incident was not premeditated and he had been drinking. He was very remorseful for what had happened and was now motivated to address his problems. He was also reconciled with his partner.
Mr Moyle told Cain he had serious concerns about him and made conditions that he had to attend counselling for domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse, as and when directed by the probation service.
The suspended prison sentence was coupled with a two year supervision order.
