Following the successful implementation of the one-way system on the Mountain Road for the past two TT Festivals, it has been agreed to make the road one-way again for TT 2009.
The system was introduced in 2007 after a public consultation and endorsement from the Council of Ministers. The system was introduced to improve public safety and reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions on the Mountain Road during the busy TT period.
Although the one-way system helps to prevent head-on collisions riders and motorists are reminded to keep a safe distance from the vehicle or bike in front of them.
The one-way system will run the length of the Mountain Road, from Ramsey Hairpin to Creg Ny Baa, and will be in place for the
entire TT fortnight, commencing on Saturday 30th May and reverting back to two way traffic on Monday 15th June.
The road will be actively policed 24 hours a day during this period, and particular hazard points will be coned off and signed, in order to assist with traffic calming. Specific locations where coning will be used are the Hairpin, Waterworks, Bungalow, Keppel Gate and Creg Ny Baa.
Detailed arrangements are being made to enable Race Marshals to get to and from their stations. Motorists and riders are reminded that while the Mountain Road is one-way it is still illegal to cross the solid white line in the centre of the road.
On the morning of Saturday 30th May the Mountain Road will close at 10am and reopen later that same day as a one-way road southbound in the direction of the course. It will remain one-way until Monday 15th June when the road will close at 10am and reopen later the same day as a two-way road.
All cones and signs will be removed from the road before race and practice sessions and the Mountain Road will close early to facilitate this. On practice days the road will close one hour earlier than the rest of the course and on race days 30 minutes earlier. The road will remain closed after the practices and racing to allow for the cones to be replaced.
To aid traffic flow on the Douglas to Ramsey Coast Road there will be temporary parking restrictions in Onchan and Laxey and the Department will also make alterations to the timings of traffic signals to accommodate the heavier than normal traffic flow in Onchan.
Please note, the road from the Creg Ny Baa to Hillberry and Douglas will remain two-way. Additional signage will be erected to highlight this.
