Minister says 'no' to law change for cyclists

by isleofman.com 11th May 2009

A MHK has been told there is no need for legislation to bring in spot fines for cyclists who ride on public roads without lights.

Onchan member Peter Karran asked if regulations could be tightened, and suggested parents should be made legally responsible for children who broke the law.

Transport Minister David Anderson has told him existing legislation allows police officers to take action against "dangerous, careless and inconsiderate cycling, caused through not using lights when it is dark".

Mr Anderson says the DoT runs a safety campaign in the autumn each year to remind all road users, including cyclists, to use their lights when it is dark.

Nine and ten year-old school children are given the same message during cycling proficiency training and there will be a further public awareness campaign later this year.
