Saints knock out champions

by isleofman.com 2nd May 2009

St Mary’s ended Rushen United’s hopes of a league and cup double in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

The Saints triumphed in a penalty shoot-out to send the Combination One League Champions out of the JCK Ltd Junior Cup.

Jack Varey fired the Saints into a half-time lead before Daniel Pownall equalised for Rushen in the second half.

A keenly fought contest produced no more goals in normal or extra-time and Rushen triumphed 5-4 on spot-kicks after sudden death.

Elsewhere, Alan Kelch threatened an upset for Douglas Royal with the only goal of the first half.

However, Peel showed their experience in the second period, running out 3-1 winners through Stewart Morrison, Lee Gale and Danny Bell goals.

St George’s also overcame the spirited challenge of a Combination Two side.

Goals from player-manager Brian Gartland, Alastair Morris and Adam Hudgeon sealed a 3-0 success over Marown at Crosby.

Doubles from Dan Hattersley and Mark Notman fired Castletown to a 4-2 victory over Pulrose to ensure a Combination Two presence in the semi-finals.

Spencer Bell and Aaron Raby netted for battling Pulrose.

Two sides who can take much promise from the season met up north in CFS Division Two.

David Skillen scored twice and Adam Storr grabbed the other as Pulrose won 3-1 at Ramsey Youth Centre.

Braddan thrashed bottom club Ronaldsway 6-1.

Carl Kenny was the star of the show with four goals and he was joined on the scoresheet by Shane Larkin who netted twice.

Kevin Murphy scored the Rockets consolation.

A solitary goal was enough to give Onchan victory over battling Northern Athletic in the other match.
