'Cycling buses' initiative in the west

Pupils and staff at Queen Elizabeth II High School are being urged to leave their cars at home today and opt for pedal power instead.

Four 'cycling buses' are heading into Peel this morning, with the aim of improving health and the environment.

From 7.30am, groups of cyclists are travelling in from Union Mills, Kirk Michael, Foxdale and Glen Maye, so motorists are asked to be extra careful, especially on the main road.

QEII is the first school on the Island to hold such an event, and coordinator Lesley Sleight says there will be tea and toast waiting for all those who take part.

She also hopes it could lead to a more permanent fixture which would encourage people to cycle in more often:
