Swine flu: adopt strict hygiene measures

by isleofman.com 27th April 2009

The Island's public health officials are urging the Manx public to adopt strict hygiene practices - as Britain goes on alert over swine flu.

Health chiefs met with government officials this morning (Monday) to discuss the threat posed by the outbreak.

The message is - there's no need for real concern at present.

But events in the UK and elsewhere will be closely monitored.

Acting director of public health, Dr Paul Emerson, says washing hands thoroughly, sneezing or coughing into a tissue, and keeping food surfaces clean, are vital to stop the spread of any flu-like virus.

And if you do develop flu symptoms, you should stay at home and call your GP for advice.

Dr Emerson is urging parents to ensure their children follow the hygiene rules.
