Celebrity death helps focus minds on HPV virus

by isleofman.com 27th April 2009

A woman who has recovered from cervical cancer says the turnout at a recent meeting to explain action by the Manx government against the disease was a complete surprise.

Vicky Fleming spoke to a large number of parents and pupils at Queen Elizabeth II High School on the planned programme of vaccinations against HPV, a virus which causes 99 per cent of cases.

The jabs are for teenage girls, and similar talks will be held at other schools in the Island next month.

Ms Fleming says it's sad to think the death of a well-known person like Jade Goody was needed to put the illness in the spotlight (play attached audio file):

Earlier this month, Health Minister Eddie Teare told the House of Keys HPV vaccinations would be offered to girls in the 12 to 18 age group, in the next year.

The programme was launched in the United Kingdom last autumn, starting with 12 and 13 year olds, before being extended.
