Giant gull gets planning approval

by isleofman.com 27th April 2009

A bird with a four metre wing span is to have a permanent home in the capital.

Planning permission has been given for the sculpture of a gull to mark the start and finish of the Raad ny Foillan (Way of the Gull) coastal path.

It will be sited at the new entrance to the Bottleneck car park on Douglas Promenade.

The fibreglass installation will be suspended from a 10-metre high tripod, and will act as a wind vane and serve as a symbolic gateway for people tackling the 95 mile walk.

The ?30,000 gull was created by Douglas artist Krista Magee and its location has been the subject of considerable public discussion during the past couple of years.

At different times there were plans to position it alongside the lifting bridge in the inner harbour, on both the north and south quays, but neither of those schemes went ahead.
