Immigration report backed by Tynwald

Regular reviews of child benefit payments, pursuing access to criminal records and the introduction of a points-based system, where potential new residents would be 'scored' on their likely contribution to the economy.

Those are among the proposals which could now be implemented, after Tynwald backed a report with a series of recommendations for new controls on immigration into the Isle of Man.

A new Migration Policy Group may also be established which, among other things, would examine changes to the law in the United Kingdom and consider whether they could be incorporated into immigration rules for the Isle of Man.

The proposals, in a report by the Council of Ministers, include more rigorous enforcement of work permit laws.

Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney says it’s vital to consider all options to move the Island's economy forward, including extending the time required to attain the status of 'Isle of Man worker' from five to ten years:
