'WWII motar rounds' discovered near Chasms

by isleofman.com 21st April 2009

Footpaths near to the Chasms remained closed this lunchtime as the emergency services deal with unexploded World War II shells.

The cache of what are thought to be mortar rounds was discovered by a walker at around 5.30pm yesterday.

Police have cordoned off the area, although the main road to the Sound Cafe remains open.

Chief officer of the Isle of Man Coastguard Colin Finney says other routes have been closed and walkers should avoid the area.

He told Manx Radio:

"Police have put a cordon on the footpath, between somewhere south of the Chasms and the pathway down into the Sound, over Spanish Head.

"That's precautionary until the area has been thoroughly checked and to that extent the footpath in that location is effectively closed."
