DAFF warns of heavy fines for illegal felling

by isleofman.com 21st April 2009

Anyone planning to work on, or bring down, trees is being reminded of the possible serious consequences of failing to contact the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry.

The maximum fine for illegal tree felling and limbing is ?20,000.

The department says it regularly receives enquiries about tree felling and tree work generally.

Minister Phil Gawne says there are exceptions to the rules, but some people unsure of the laws protecting trees start work which could lead to prosecution (play attached audio file):

No permit is needed to remove or prune limbs, or to reduce the overall height of any tree, as long as it isn't registered.

The tree register can be viewed at the department’s offices in St John's, by appointment.
