Nature lovers all over the world will arise at dawn on Sunday May 3rd, International Dawn Chorus Day, to meet at their local wildlife spots. People will gather to listen to the dawn chorus of wild birds singing to proclaim their territories in the early part of the breeding season.
The Curraghs Wildlife Park has been celebrating International Dawn Chorus Day for many years and participants usually hear around two dozen of our local songsters, including grasshopper warblers, siskins and even cuckoos, on their walk along the Park’s nature trail and through the Ballaugh Curraghs.
Hon Martyn Quayle, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, said ‘Dawn Chorus Day is a great annual tradition and the invitation to join the walk is open to absolutely everyone. At this time of the year we hear birds singing everywhere and it is the perfect opportunity for us to listen to nature’s finest choirs.’
Meeting at the Wildlife Park gates at 5.00 am, the walk lasts around two hours and participants are invited also to sit down to a hearty breakfast in the Lakeside Cafe afterwards. Breakfasts should be booked with the cafe direct by telephoning 897324.
