As Spring gets into full swing, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has issued a timely reminder to householders on how they can help birds such as swallows when they return to build their nests.
It says a little thought ahead of any repair work to houses or buildings can avoid conflict with wildlife, and avoid further delays in dealing with preventable problems.
The department suggests leaving any work in locations where it's known birds nest until later in the year or, if the work is essential during the nesting period, access should be blocked to returning birds before they start building their nests, to ensure they aren't trapped inside.
Bat roost exit points should not be blocked and advice should be sought from DAFF before undertaking work at a bat roost.
Householders are also reminded that it is an offence under the Wildlife Act to destroy nests which are in use or being built, whether or not the action is intentional or reckless.
DAFF says care and planning can help to protect wildlife within our human-dominated environment.
