Call for SIM card ownership controls

by isleofman.com 14th April 2009

A teaching union representative in the Isle of Man wants politicians and phone companies to take action to prevent people using mobile phones to make malicious calls.

Andrew Shipley, from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, believes there should be tighter controls on the ownership of SIM cards, including a requirement for all purchasers to provide their name and address, so anybody abusing the phone system can be easily traced.

Mr Shipley and his wife received months of silent and sexually explicit calls, probably from former pupils, in the early hours of the morning (play attached audio file):

Mr Shipley says he doesn't want anybody to get a criminal record as a result of what happened to him, but he strongly believes action is needed to prevent further abuse of the mobile phone system.
