Councillors warned they could lose votes

by isleofman.com 3rd April 2009

A protest is planned for tomorrow against the banning of dogs from most of the parks, glens and gardens in Douglas.

It has been organised by a woman from the town who believes responsible dog owners, who have always cleaned up after their pets, are being penalised because of the behaviour of a minority of irresponsible people who never make the effort.

The woman, Alexis, says a petition has been signed by large numbers of dog owners but councillors aren't listening.

She told Manx Radio:

"Since the ban has come in you've seen people who have been picking up for the last 20 years saying 'we've been banned, what's the point, we've been picking up for 20 years and this is the thanks we get' and they've actually stopped picking up now and the poo problem is getting worse.

"Basically, we've got over 3,000 signatures and the councillors just aren't listening.

"They couldn't care less, there are over 6,000 dog owners, and that's a lot of votes they are going to miss out on.

"We haven't actually delivered it yet, but they will know about it."

The protest will be at the park in Woodbourne Square, at 11am tomorrow.

Time of protest: 11am.
