Watching brief on Sellafield

by isleofman.com 1st April 2009

Proposals to build two new nuclear power plants on the west coast of Cumbria are being watched closely by the Manx government.

Two potential sites in the county have been identified, one of them close to Sellafield.

The Island has called for the closure of the decommissioning plant and opposes any future reprocessing of spent nuclear materials on the site.

The nomination of the Cumbrian locations for a UK government review of potential sites for new atomic plants, brings the Manx policy into sharp focus.

Environment Minister John Shimmin says they are keeping a close eye on developments.
