Girls to be given cervical cancer jabs

Teenage girls in the Isle of Man are to be vaccinated against a virus associated with the development of cervical cancer.

In the House of Keys today, Health Minister Eddie Teare announced that the HPV vaccination programme would be offered to girls in the 12 to 18 age group, in the next year.

The programme was launched in the United Kingdom last autumn, starting with 12 and 13 year olds, before being extended.

Mr Teare told the Keys the jabs would coincide with an extensive sexual health education campaign, although he stressed it shouldn't be perceived as a "female problem":
