Karran to move 'access to justice' amendment

by isleofman.com 30th March 2009
An MHK believes all the Island’s advocates should be forced to devote a proportion of their time to legal aid cases.

Onchan member and Liberal Vannin Party leader Peter Karran will try to put the idea into a new law during tomorrow's sitting of the House of Keys.

He will propose a change to the Advocates (Amendment) Bill which would make advocates do more legal aid work.

Mr Karran says it's a way of ensuring everybody has access to justice:

"They will have a duty as far as legal aid work is concerned, [and] for every 20 hours chargeable they would have to do one hour's worth of legal aid work. They would be paid at the rate.

"Obviously the corporate lawyers we have would not be able to do criminal legal aid, and it would be a farce for them to do [it], but they've got to negotiate with other lawyers in order to take up their responsibilities."
