'Best person for job' will remain headteacher policy

by isleofman.com 30th March 2009
Education Minister Anne Craine says there will be no positive discrimination when it comes to headteachers.

She was speaking after a report in the United Kingdom said there were too few headmasters in primary schools, leaving boys with fewer role models than girls.

Mrs Craine says the problem is the same in the Isle of Man, where the majority of primary heads are women.

But she says it’s simply a question of choosing the best person for the job rather than filling vacancies based on gender.

She told Manx Radio:

"We are fortunate in that we have a mix of both male and female headteachers in our primary schools.

"We've had the discussion in the past that there is a shortage of the male role figure in our primary schools.

"What we do about attracting men into primary teaching is really another question, but it is important that whoever we get, male or female, that it's the right person for the job in that school, in that community."
