Manx duo Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh had to settle for sixth place at the World Track Championships Madison race in Poland.

The race was affected by a collision which subsequently led to Kennaugh being brought down by another rider.

However, the 19 year-old overcame his injuries to return to action and finish the 50 kilometre event.

Denmark won the gold.

Manxman Mark Higgins missed out on victory in the first round of the 2009 British Rally Championship by just 900ths of a second.

He and co-driver Bryan Thomas had to settle for second place behind Irishman Keith Cronin and Greg Shinnors in the Bulldog International Rally in North Wales.

Another Manxman, Rob Fagg, alongside Kyle Orr, was 17th.

Keith Gerrard marked his first international call-up to the senior ranks at the World Cross Country Championships by taking 96th place out of 153 athletes.

He helped the Great Britain team to 14th place in the process at the event in Jordan.
