Island near top of teenage binge drinking table

by isleofman.com 27th March 2009
A report into the drug and alcohol habits of 15 to 16 year olds across Europe has revealed the seriousness of the binge drinking culture in the Isle of Man.

The European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs includes findings for the Island, which were put together from a sample of 740 students who completed a questionnaire in 2007.

They show binge drinking has increased to the point where the Island very nearly tops the European league table.

Director of the Alcohol Advisory Service Thea Ozanturk says it's a worrying trend (play attached audio file):

The report shows cannabis use in the 15 to 16 age group has declined by 12 per cent since 2003, but is still at the top end of the European table.

Smoking has also fallen and is below the average for the continent.

Thea Ozanturk was talking to Paul Moulton from the BBC.
