Man jailed following Allan Street 'siege'

by isleofman.com 26th March 2009
A 48 year-old man has been jailed for six months by Deemster Doyle for affray.

Richard Alan Kewley, whose address was given as care of the prison, admitted the charge, which followed an incident at a house in Allan Street, Douglas on July 15 last year.

Kewley refused to allow Douglas Borough Council officials and police into the property, following a complaint about water running in the backyard.

He shouted threats to those outside but, after a stand-off lasting over six hours, was talked out of the premises by a police negotiator and arrested.

The incident was referred to as a 'siege' at the time, and involved the deployment of dog handlers and officers with fire arms.

His advocate said he suffered anxiety and fear and his initial response was one of confusion which spiralled out of control.

He was now working with the appropriate authorities to help him with his problems and was very sorry and remorseful.

Deemster Doyle told him he must accept all the help and support that was being made available to him.
