Budget shocker for Island schools - claim

A teaching union is warning schools in the Isle of Man might have to lay off staff in an attempt to save hundreds of thousands of pounds this year.

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers says this year’s budget announced by Treasury Minister Allan Bell didn’t take into account that while the financial year runs from April to April, school years run from September to September.

As a result, many schools are now facing staff cuts in order to save money, according to ATL branch secretary Andrew Shipley.

He says it’s a problem that affects all of the Island’s schools to differing degrees:
