Trip of a Lifetime: Trek the Inca Trail for Charity

by isleofman.com 19th March 2009

If you've ever dreamed of hiking the world-famous Inca Trail in Peru and seeing the lost city of Machu Picchu, this is your chance to turn dreams into reality! The Isle of Man Children’s Centre is laying down the challenge to intrepid souls who’d like to enrol for a charity-backed adventure in one of the world’s most stunning travel destinations.

The sponsored event, organised in conjunction with specialist charity challenge organisers, Global Adventure Challenges, is being officially launched at the Douglas Bay Yacht Club on Wednesday March 25th at 6pm.

'Full details of the itinerary will be unveiled, including where you’ll be staying, everything you need to do to prepare for the event and the various ways that the trip can be funded', IOMCC Fundraising Coordinator Mark Eastham revealed.

'It’s hoped that the event will raise thousands of pounds for the Centre while at the same time providing an unprecedented opportunity for local people to experience a spectacular location on the other side of the world. If you want to be part of an unforgettable challenge, then you cannot afford to miss the launch event.'

Highlights of the ten-day adventure include trekking over three mountain passes that rise up to 4200 metres, experiencing cloud forest and deep jungle, and exploring ancient Inca sites only reachable on foot, before reaching Machu Picchu, the most revered and breathtaking Inca ruin in Latin America.

The trip itself requires a reasonable level of fitness but there is plenty of time to get into shape between now and the departure to Peru in November. 'This adventure has been designed to be challenging but achievable, as long as you take your fitness training seriously beforehand' said Mark.  'Good cardio-vascular fitness is essential and, of course, the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it. Spaces will be limited, so we advise anyone interested in putting their name down to attend Douglas Yacht Club on March 25th.'
