MHKs told to state their positions on pension reform

by isleofman.com 19th March 2009
One of the largest unions in the Isle of Man is calling on MHKs to stop sitting on the fence regarding proposed reform of the Island's public sector pension shemes.

Regional industrial organiser for Unite Mick Hewer says they need to state their position publicly in relation to the possible changes.

A consultation is currently being carried out on the proposals, from which Tynwald Members are excluded.

Mr Hewer is concerned plans to unify public sector pensions are a "done dea" and says members of the union have been kept in the dark.

He also believes the time has come for MHKs to say where they stand.

He told Manx Radio:

"It's very easy, all they have to do is make a public statement in their name saying they agree with the chief minister, they agree with the proposals as they stand, or they don't agree with the proposed changes, they don't agree with the consultation process and they expect existing schemes to be left alone for existing members.

"There have been serious flaws in the whole consultation process.

"Only recently, there were a number of presentations taking place around the Island and a large number of members of Unite didn't know the presentations were on, didn't know they had been invited to them, because the information had gone out on the [government's] intranet."
