MHK claims people don't trust banks

North Douglas MHK John Houghton is appealing to people not to keep large sums of cash hidden in their homes.

In Tynwald this week, he asked a question about the amount of banknotes in circulation and claims millions of pounds has vanished since April last year.

He says he strongly suspects people who don’t trust banks are now opting to stash their money in safes and under mattresses.

Mr Houghton says information supplied by Treasury Minister Allan Bell in Tynwald gives an idea of the scale of the problem:
