Government payments to law firms revealed

by isleofman.com 19th March 2009
Law practices in the Isle of Man received a total of well over ?4.5 million pounds in fees from departments of the Manx government in the last three full financial years.

The figure is revealed in a reply from Attorney General John Corlett to a written question from Onchan MHK Peter Karran.

The approximate total sums paid in each of the three years were ?2 million, ?1.2 million and ?1.5 million in the last complete financial year.

The biggest spender was the Treasury - on around ?930,000 - but Mr Corlett is unable to give a breakdown of how much money went to each firm.

The Treasury is followed by Mr Corlett's chambers - which accounted for over ?600,000 - and the Manx Electricity Authority and the Department of Transport, both on around ?400,000.

The biggest sum paid in a single year was over ?500,000 by the Treasury in 2005/06.

That's followed by the Attorney General's chambers with ?380,000 last year and the Department of Home Affairs which had over ?300,000 of advice from law practices on the Island three years ago.
