Anger in Bride over Point of Ayre tip plans

by isleofman.com 19th March 2009
There's frustration and disappointment for Bride Commissioners, after Tynwald decided not to throw out plans for a new landfill tip at the Point of Ayre.

The court was asked to overturn the Council of Ministers' decision to allow Cemex Island Aggregates to operate the site.

The request to annul the approval was made by Ayre MHK Eddie Teare, but without success.

Chairman of Bride Commissioners Lesley Kneen says residents in the area are fed up of living next to rubbish.

She told Manx Radio:

"We've been having tips there for 20 years, and the way the inspector's report reads we could have tipping there for another 20 years.

"So, at that stage, somebody who was born 20 years ago is going to have it throughout all their adult life, and probably their children and grandchildren.

"Personally, I think it's a disgrace and I think that with certain exceptions we have once again been betrayed by our elected representatives."
