'Iconic building' moves a big step forward

A huge new family leisure complex is looking a real possibility for the Summerland site in Douglas.

Proposals put forward by the Sefton Group have been chosen by the Department of Tourism and Leisure.

They include a multiplex cinema, ten-pin bowling, childrens' facilities and exhibition areas.

The DTL says its vision to create a family-friendly facility housed in an 'iconic building' have moved a big step forward.

But there's still a long way to go.

Marian Kenny reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

Plans for the new centre, to be called The Wave, have been put forward by the Sefton Group.

Theirs was the scheme which found favour with the Department of Tourism and Leisure who had invited expresssions of interest.

The group now has to come up with approvals and surveys by the end of June.

'The Wave' is billed as a destination venue for all age groups, from tots to teens and beyond.

The complex would also house a casino and bingo, conference and functions rooms, restaurants and bars.

But it's all far from a done deal.

Sefton Group chief operating officer Mark Lewin says their property on Lord Street, earmaked for a new Hilton Hotel, remains an alternative to the Summerland scheme.
