How to identify forged banknotes

by isleofman.com 17th March 2009
'Check your change for signs of forgery', police are warning, after two counterfeit ?5 notes were found in Douglas at the weekend.

The two copies are not being linked, but it hasn't been ruled out that somebody could be mass producing them.

Police also believe there could be forgeries of other values in circulation.

Acting Inspector Steve Maddocks from the Douglas Neighbourhood Policing Team says forgeries should be easy to identify.

He gave this advice:

"What I would suggest is that if anybody is handed a bundle of notes in their change, go through the notes individually before you put it in your pocket, just to ensure you are happy with the notes themselves.

"The paper quality is quite distinguishable on real notes - it's like a waxy feel to it - whereas the counterfeit money is literally printed on paper."
