MLC seeks answers to waste policy questions

by isleofman.com 16th March 2009
Several elements of the Department of Local Government and the Environment's waste policy will come under scrutiny during question time in Tynwald tomorrow.

Member of the Legislative Council David Callister will ask DoLGE Minister John Shimmin for details of the amount of refuse going to the incinerator, whether kerbside collections have led to a reduction in waste going to the Eastern Civic Amenity site and the monthly tonnage of green waste being deposited there.

Mr Callister is concerned that green waste which has been left at the Eastern Civic Amenity site is going to the Energy from Waste Plant, rather than being composted.

He told Manx Radio:

"A number of people have said to me they are very dissatisfied that green waste is apparently going to the incinerator and not being used for composting.

"There are opportunities on the Isle of Man for this green waste to be composted - there's a very successful operation near Peel - so I'd like to know what is happening with that in particular, because there is a demand for compost now, and it should be being fulfilled."
