'Scheme of Arrangement offers best solution'

by isleofman.com 14th March 2009
The Treasury Minister has ruled out the idea of the Manx government taking out a massive loan to pay Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander depositors.

A figure of ?600 million has been mooted, but Allan Bell says that's not the best way forward.

Depositors have recently reiterated they are 100% united and committed to seeing all of their money is returned to them, in the face of claims from Mr Bell they are no longer speaking with one voice.

He says the government is continuing to do all it can for them.

He told Manx Radio:

"We do care about them, passionately.

"We are working hard within our abilities at the moment to try and find that solution.

"Simply taking out a ?600 million sovereign loan is not the way forward at this time.

"We are working through a Scheme of Arrangement which we believe will give the best solution for the depositors."
