Children learn from tree planting programme

The last plantings in the current phase of the Trees for Life initiative take place today.

More than 500 pupils from 14 primary schools have been involved in the scheme, which aims to bring children into contact with trees and the natural environment, and boost the numbers of native species on the Island.

The children have been taking part in a number of learning activities, while caring for their container grown trees all winter.

Broad leaf trees such as Oak, Ash, Rowan and Silver Birch are being planted on five hectares of land at Conrhenny.

Chairman of the Forestry Division of DAFF Brenda Cannell, MHK, says the children are thoroughly enjoying the experience, and she hopes the project will continue for many years to come:
