Island must explain its position, as G20 looms

by isleofman.com 9th March 2009
With tax havens high on the agenda ahead of next month’s G20 summit in London, the chief minister says it's time to tackle issues head-on and try and influence policy decisions.

Tony Brown insists it's vital to explain the differences between the types of offshore jurisdiction, and imperative to keep promoting what the Isle of Man does and how it complies with regulations.

Manx Radio asked him if he thought the European leaders are recognising the Isle of Man's position, and he gave this reply:

"Whether or not they are, and we don't know, they have a responsibility to look at that.

"I mean, the Isle of Man is being very proactive in this way.

"If countries achieve what is being encouraged, to make them more open and so on, and then there is no reward for that, countries will turn around and say 'why should be do it?'

"There has to be some fairness in all of this and when we take a responsible attitude, as we have done over many years of developing and moving forward, then there should be due recognition of that by the larger countries around the world."
