Manx rally driver Martyn Jones and co-driver Kris Killip made an encouraging debut as they began their challenge for the Ford Fiesta Championship.

The pair finished 33rd overall in the opening round, the Malcolm Wilson Rally in Cumbria.

In tough conditions, the debutants backed by the Manx Motorsport Youth Trust, also finished sixth in their class.

Keith Gerrard was sixth in the Inter Counties cross country at Nottingham, narrowly missing out on the third automatic qualifying place for the World Cross Country Championship, although he remains in contention for selection.

In cycling, Mark Cavendish was 24th in the one-day Eroica Tosscana in Italy.

Only 72 of the 114 competitors finished the 190km race.

Jonny Bellis was 82nd on stage four of the Tour of Murcia.
