Minister to be asked for taxi briefing

by isleofman.com 7th March 2009
An MHK wants to know if Tynwald will be briefed on recommendations relating to the future of the Island's taxi trade, before the plans are debated in the court.

In the House of Keys on Tuesday, South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey will ask Transport Minister David Anderson if such a session is planned.

A select committee has been looking into the consequences of deregulation, and Mr Malarkey believes more information is needed before a full-blown debate (play attached audio file):

Last month the Road Transport Licensing Committee said it would delay hearing any applications for new taxi licences until the Department of Transport had reported back to Tynwald on its consultation into deregulating the trade.

The committee had previously said it would overturn a moratorium on issuing new taxi licences, as it was worried applicants who had been waiting for years for their cases to be heard could launch legal challenges on the grounds of undue delay.

A report will go before Tynwald at this month's sitting.
