Health agreement to run for another year

Isle of Man residents will continue to receive free treatment in United Kingdom hospitals for the next year, even though people from Jersey will have to pay from the end of this month.

Health Minister Eddie Teare has confirmed the reciprocal health care agreement between the Isle of Man and the UK will remain in place until April 1, 2010.

The UK announced in October that a long standing agreement with the Crown Dependencies would be brought to an end.

It means Manx residents will still be treated for free in a doctor's surgery or Accident and Emergency, but a hospital stay will have to be paid for.

Over the next 12 months Mr Teare is hoping to learn from Jersey's experience, to help make the transition as smooth as possible:
