Baby used in attempt to smuggle tobacco

by isleofman.com 6th March 2009
Sentencing on a woman who tried to smuggle tobacco into the prison at Jurby has been adjourned by High Bailiff Michael Moyle.

Twenty-seven year-old Gemma Victoria Cowell, of Watterson Lane in Douglas, admitted the offence.

The prosecution said Cowell and her two young children went to the prison in September last year to visit her husband.

Cowell handed one of the youngsters to her husband while she went to a vending machine.

Officers saw him take something out of the baby's clothing, which turned out to be 62g of tobacco and a packet of cigarette papers, all wrapped in cling film.

Cowell initially denied the offence when officers spoke to her about it the following month.

Mr Moyle described it as serious and premeditated and warned her of the possible consequences.

She was bailed until March 31.
