Switchover advice - avoid rogue traders!

by isleofman.com 26th February 2009

The digital switchover is leading to a new breed of rogue traders.

Digital UK, the organisation leading the process, has teamed up with the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading and Age Concern to issue advice to residents who may need a new aerial to receive a digital signal.

This will affect only five-to-ten per cent of households, with a cost ranging from £80 to £150.

Most existing aerial will be fine for the switch-over to digital TV but those that are in poor condition will need to be changed.

That needs to be carried out by 'Registered Digital installers' displaying the 'digital tick' logo. That means they're approved and security checked with the relevant qualifications and insurance.

Digital UK and the Island's OFT have some top tips for viewers - which include using the test card on teletext page 284 for guidance about whether you need a new aerial and never agreeing to have work done by an aerial installer who turns up without an appointment and doesn't show you ID.

If you suspect you have been ripped off, or you need more advice, you can contact the OFT on 686500.
